Vat Dyes

Vat dyes are ancient, water-insoluble colorants, with indigo and anthraquinone being the most famous historical and industrial examples. Because they cannot dissolve in water, they cannot be applied directly to fabric. The dyeing process requires a chemical reduction step, typically using sodium hydrosulfite in a strongly alkaline medium (caustic soda). This converts the pigment into a soluble, often colorless or yellow-tinted form known as “leuco” dye, which possesses a high affinity for cellulosic fibers like cotton.

Once the fabric absorbs the leuco dye, it is removed from the vat and exposed to atmospheric oxygen or a chemical oxidizing agent. This oxidation converts the dye back into its original, completely insoluble pigment state, locking it permanently inside the amorphous core of the fiber. This molecular trapping grants vat-dyed textiles elite-tier washfastness, chlorine resistance, and lightfastness, making them the standard for denim and military uniforms.
