In industrial and artisan textile processing, “Wax Colour” refers to the specialized chemical and mechanical application of molten waxes used as a resist medium in the traditional art of Batik dyeing. The process does not involve a dye made of wax; rather, a precisely formulated blend of paraffin wax and beeswax is heated to a liquid state and applied to fabric using a copper stylus (canting) or metal stamps.
The wax penetrates the fabric fibers and solidifies, creating an absolute, impermeable barrier against water. The fabric is then immersed in a cold dye bath (typically using low-temperature reactive, naphthol, or indigosol dyes). The dyed areas absorb color, while the waxed sections remain pristine. The fabric is subsequently immersed in boiling water to melt and strip the wax, revealing sharp, uncolored patterns. A characteristic “crackle” effect occurs when dye seeps through intentional micro-fractures in the cooled wax.
