Nylon Dyes

Nylon Dyes

High-Performance Dyes for Superior Nylon Coloration

Nylon Dyes do not represent a single, unique chemical class, but rather a functional selection of existing dye categories tailored to optimize the coloring of nylon (polyamide) fibers. Because nylon’s molecular structure mimics protein fibers by containing terminal amine end-groups, while simultaneously exhibiting a hydrophobic, plastic-like nature, it can accept multiple dye types. Industrial nylon dyeing relies primarily on acid dyes, disperse dyes, and reactive dyes.

Nylon dyes are preferred for medium to bright shades because they form strong ionic bonds with the amine groups, yielding high wet-fastness. Disperse dyes are utilized for pale, highly uniform shades because they migrate exceptionally well and mask structural physical variations (barré defects) in the nylon yarn. Reactive dyes are reserved for high-performance applications requiring extreme washfastness. Managing pH and temperature is critical in nylon dyeing to prevent un-level, streaky results.
