Disperse Dyes

Disperse Dyes

Disperse dyes are non-ionic, water-insoluble aromatic compounds specifically engineered for dyeing highly hydrophobic synthetic fibers, most notably polyester, nylon, and acetate. Because these fibers lack ionic dye sites and repel water, traditional water-soluble dyes cannot penetrate them. Disperse dyes are formulated as microscopic crystal particles suspended in an aqueous medium with the help of powerful dispersing agents.

The application requires extreme conditions, typically executed via High-Temperature, High-Pressure (HTHP) methods at around 130°C, or through the dry-heat Thermosol process at 200°C. Under this intense heat, the synthetic fiber’s polymer chains expand and open up, while the disperse dye volatilizes or dissolves into a monomolecular form, physically diffusing into the solid amorphous regions of the plastic. Once cooled, the fiber structure contracts, permanently trapping the dye molecules inside. This process provides outstanding washfastness and exceptional sublimation (heat) fastness.
