Direct dyes, also known as substantive dyes, are water-soluble anionic compounds that can be applied directly to cellulosic fibers like cotton, linen, and rayon without the aid of a chemical mordant. They possess a long, planar molecular structure that allows them to align parallel to the cellulose chains, relying on weak hydrogen bonds and Van der Waals forces to remain inside the amorphous regions of the fiber.
The dyeing process is highly economical and straightforward, typically conducted in a neutral or slightly alkaline bath at boiling temperatures, with sodium chloride or sodium sulfate added as an electrolyte to force the dye out of solution and into the fabric. While direct dyes offer a broad color range and are very cost-effective, their reliance on physical attraction rather than chemical bonding results in poor washfastness, necessitating post-dyeing treatments with cationic fixing agents.
