High-Performance Sulphur Dyes for Deep & Rich Shades

Sulphur dyes are complex, organic macromolecular compounds containing sulfur linkages that are completely insoluble in water. They are highly valued in the textile industry as an economical choice for producing deep, dark shades—predominantly intense blacks, navy blues, chocolates, and dark greens—on cellulosic fibers like cotton and rayon. The application mechanism closely mirrors that of vat dyes: the insoluble dye must be chemically reduced using sodium sulfide or reducing sugars in an alkaline bath to form a water-soluble leuco compound.

After this soluble form penetrates the fiber structure, the fabric undergoes an oxidation process using air, hydrogen peroxide, or sodium bromate to revert the dye back to its insoluble polymer state. While sulphur dyes are highly cost-effective and provide excellent washfastness, they generally offer moderate lightfastness and carry a risk of “sulphur tendering,” where residual sulfur can slowly convert into sulfuric acid over time, degrading the fabric strength if not thoroughly neutralized.
